The use of Holmium Lasers has long been accepted as the gold standard for treating BPH.
The Holmium laser’s high level of precision and enhanced efficacy, allow surgeons to quickly remove the enlarged prostate tissue, and provide quick symptom alleviation and a long term solution.
There are two common BPH treatments utilizing the advantages of the Holmium laser — Holmium Vaporization and Holmium Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP).

TREATMENT OPTION NO. 1 – HOLMIUM LASER

Enuclation (Holep)

The procedure

During HoLEP, which is performed under either general or local anesthesia, your doctor will insert a thin tube into the urethra.
Through this tube passes a special thin camera and a flexible Holmium laser fiber. The camera allows your doctor to see the prostate and bladder as well as guide the treatment procedure.
Using the fiber, your doctor will deliver a high energy Holmium laser beam, that will separate the enlarged prostate tissue from the capsule. This tissue will than be temporarily moved into the bladder, where it will be extracted away by a special extraction device.
The entire procedure is performed without any external incisions, with minimal invasiveness.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Thanks to the HoLEP procedure’s high efficacy, patients typically go home the next day. You may experience some bleeding in the urine, which should clear within 12 hours.
In order to drain the remaining enucleated tissue, a post-operative catheter would be placed for up to 24 hours after the surgery. Following the procedure, you will feel immediate alleviation of your BPH symptoms, and an improvement in your quality of life.
You will be able to quickly return to your daily routine, without any pain or discomfort.

TREATMENT OPTION NO. 2 – HOLMIUM LASER

Vaporization

The procedure

During Holmium Laser Vaporization of the prostate, a unique laser fiber is inserted through the urinary tract until it reaches the prostate.
Your surgeon will then apply Holmium laser energy directly on the obstructive prostatic tissue. The high energy emitted by the laser is absorbed by the prostate tissue, which then causes the tissue to vaporize. This is done until prostate tissue is completely removed.
Thanks to the Holmium laser’s precise penetration, there is no collateral damage to surrounding tissues. The vaporized prostatic tissue will drain spontaneously out of your body with the irrigation fluid used during the procedure.
The holmium laser vaporization procedure is highly effective, and is associated with a short hospital stay, quick recovery and minimal post-operative complications.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Prostate Vaporization using high power Holmium laser is highly effective at improving BPH symptoms.
Many patients can be discharged from the hospital on the day of surgery, although one night hospitalization is fairly common. You may experience some discomfort or bleeding when urinating, yet these resolve on their own.
In order to drain the remaining vaporized tissue, a post-operative catheter would be placed for up to 24 hours after the surgery.
Following the procedure, you will feel immediate alleviation of your BPH symptoms, and an improvement in your quality of life. You will be able to quickly return to your daily routine, without any pain or discomfort.
